The South Bank itself is largely pedestrian: the riverside walk has no parking at all, and the Lambeth and Southwark streets behind it are controlled on both sides of the borough line. The nearest private spaces sit a few streets back, in mansion-block garages and gated developments off the main roads.

Most drivers here are going to something with a start time: the Royal Festival Hall, the National Theatre, the BFI or the London Eye. A pre-booked space removes the one part of the evening that cannot be timed, and Waterloo's own crowds make the surrounding streets no easier.
