Richmond's centre and the streets around the station are permit controlled, and the riverside adds a hazard of its own, since the Thames covers the lowest stretch at a high spring tide. Away from the centre the roads open out, and drives, garages and wide frontages become the rule rather than the exception.

The station brings together the District line, the Overground and National Rail services to Waterloo. Richmond Park draws walkers all year, Richmond Theatre fills on show nights, and when Twickenham hosts the rugby, a fair share of the crowd starts its walk from a Richmond parking space.
